Welcome to Strictly Confidential - Exclusively on the Head-On Radio Network For too long the fundamentalist "Christian Right" has waged war on the LGBT community. While the “Christian Right" continues to block hate crime legislation, claiming it interferes with their freedom of religion. The Bush administration, cowering to their will, supports this outrage by threatening to veto legislation that would add the LGBT community to the current hate crime laws. Mind you that the "Christian Right" already enjoys protection under the said law. LGBT individuals are routinely beaten, murdered, discharged from the military, fired and have their children taken away at the hands of bigots who claim the moral authority to rid the world of dykes and fags. This is being done with the full “wink and a nod” endorsement of fundamentalist Churches. Why? Some of the “faithful” don’t approve of our relationships or of our commitments to one another. They scoff at the very idea that we could love a person of the same gender. This backwoods prejudice coupled with bibliolatry is the justification they use for their silence and or outright support regarding policies that allow attacks and discrimination to escalate. Gay and Lesbian children in public schools and LGBT individuals in all walks of life are just not going to take this anymore. We are not standing idly while these fake Christians hide behind the skirts of the religion industry. It’s time that all religions embrace the maker’s message of radical inclusion and until they do, in my opinion, the Church, Mosque, Synagogue and Temple steps are covered in our blood. Peter grew up in a small rural community near Tallahassee. When he was in elementary school one of his teachers noted on his report card, “Peter is a kind boy”. “Kind” is southern speak for “Your kid is gay!”
Although “coming out” is generally understood as no longer trying to keep the fact that you are “kind” a secret, Peter feels there is another defining moment. That being the moment you come out to yourself. Peter remembers that moment quite clearly. “It happened on a Sunday morning when I was about five. I was walking from the Sunday School Building to the Church.” Peter said “it was one of those photographic moments and I still remember it vividly.” Peter was rounding the oak trees when he suddenly stopped and thought to himself “God doesn’t hate me, I never did anything to God.” Looking back on it Peter understands what stopped him in his tracks wasn’t the thought itself but the inevitable follow up thought of “why would I think God hates me?” The answer for Peter was “because I’m gay”.
Children come to believe there is no place for them simply because of exclusion. Parents, Churches and Schools fail LGBT children and reinforce violence by never mentioning the fact we exist. |
